Uruguay beats South Korea in friendly

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Goals by German Hornos and Sebastian Abreu handed Uruguay a 2-0 win over South Korea on Sunday in a friendly match.

Both sides had scoring chances in the fast-paced opening minutes, but it was a defensive mistake that allowed Uruguay to take the lead.

In the 13th minute, Cho Byung-kuk miskicked a long ball from Uruguayan playmaker Alvaro Recoba, and Hornos was there to drill the loose ball past goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae.

Abreu extended Uruguay's lead in the 54th minute. Hornos's attempt on goal off a Horacio Peralta cross fell to Abreu, who sidefooted into the top corner of the net.

But it was the South Koreans who had the better and more numerous chances, and Seoul World Cup Stadium's capacity crowd of 64,000 screamed and groaned with every miss.

In the third minute, German side Arminia Bielefeld's Cha Du-ri surged past the Uruguayan defense to meet a 60-meter (yard) pass. But his volley flew high over the crossbar.

Four minutes before halftime, Lee Eul-yong's free kick from 18 meters (yards) out curved harmlessly over the goal.

The World Cup semifinalists were no luckier in the second half, even with Song Chong-gug from Dutch club Feyenoord dominating the midfield.

South Korea's best chance came in the 70th minute, when substitute Cho Jae-jin found himself free atop the penalty area thanks to swift combination play. He turned and shot wide of the right post.

Captain Yoo Sang-chul was twice foiled by Uruguay's defense, his 47th minute header ricocheting wide off a defender's back and his low shot getting kicked away by goalkeeper Gustavo Munua in the 76th.

Uruguayan stars Alvaro Recoba of Italy's Inter Milan and Diego Forlan of England's Manchester United spurred their team on with pinpoint passing and darting runs but neither had a convincing attempt on goal.
