Eto'o to play Cameroon forward flies in for Confederations Cup finalPosted: Sunday June 29, 2003 9:04 AMMARCOUSSIS, France (AP) -- Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o returned to the national side Sunday following a win in Spain's Copa del Rey with Real Mallorca and will contest the Confederations Cup final, a team spokesman said. "He arrived at around 2 a.m. this morning," the spokesman said in a telephone interview. "He was then driven to Marcoussis and went to get some rest." Cameroon faces France at Stade de France later Sunday in the final. Eto'o scored twice Saturday night and also won a penalty as Mallorca clinched the Spanish Cup by beating Recreativo Huelva 3-0. He became the first Cameroon player to take the field following the death of midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe. "It's a very special victory. I have a teammate who is now at God's side. It's been a very difficult week. The victory is dedicated to him," Eto'o said. He boarded an airplane after the match and flew back to Paris. A short car ride later, he was back among teammates on the outskirts of the city. Eto'o missed Thursday's Confederations Cup semifinal with Colombia -- marked by Foe's tragic death -- because of his club duties. Foe collapsed on the field during Cameroon's semifinal match against Colombia and later died. In Cameroon's opening match of the tournament against Brazil, Eto'o scored a stunning goal when he smashed a dipping half-volley over the goalkeeper's head from 25 yards (meters). |
