Canada names squad for Gold Cup

OTTAWA (Reuters) -- Canada's coach Holger Osieck named a mix of youth and experience in his 18-man squad for this month's CONCACAF Gold Cup on Wednesday.

Captain Jason de Vos makes his first appearance since captaining Wigan to the English second division championship in April. He took time off to heal a broken bone in his foot following Wigan's promotion.

Earning his first call-up since the 2002 Gold Cup is midfielder Jason Bent, who missed several friendlies after suffering a hamstring injury with Plymouth Argyle in the English second division last season.

Canada look strong in goal with veteran Pat Onstad, who has led the San Jose Earthquakes to the top of Major League Soccer's Western Conference with only one loss in 10 games, and Tottenham Hotspur's Lars Hirschfeld.

Canada meet Costa Rica in their opening game on July 12 and face Cuba in their other Group D match on July 14. The top two teams in each of the four groups advance to the quarter-finals.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Pat Onstad (San Jose Earthquakes), Lars Hirschfeld (Tottenham Hotspur)

Defenders: Paul Fenwick (Hibernian), Jason de Vos (Wigan Athletic), Nick Dasovic (Vancouver Whitecaps), Nevio Pizzolitto (Montreal Impact), Chris Pozniak (Orebro)

Midfielders: Maycoll Canizalez (Werder Bremen), Richard Hastings (Graz AK), Jason Bent (Plymouth Argyle), Paul Stalteri (Werder Bremen), Daniel Imhof (St Gallen), Martin Nash (Montreal Impact), Mike Klukowski (La Louviere)

Forwards: Carlo Corazzin (Vancouver Whitecaps), Kevin McKenna (Heart of Midlothian), Davide Xausa (Livingston), Iain Hume (Tranmere Rovers).
