Colombia names experimental squad

BOGOTA (Reuters) -- Colombia followed the examples of Brazil and Mexico by naming an experimental squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Wednesday.

Coach Francisco Maturana included just two foreign-based players in the 24-man squad, while only Jairo Patino and Giovanni Hernandez played in last month's Confederations Cup where Colombia finished fourth.

Most of Colombia's best-known players, such as defenders Mario Yepes and Ivan Cordoba and striker Juan Pablo Angel, were missing.

"It's a completely new team which we are going to design in only five days," Maturana told reporters.

"It would be very cheeky on my part, as well as over-optimistic, to think that...we are going to form a team that one could say is going to win.

"The Gold Cup will give us a chance to look at other alternatives, basically."

Like Brazil, Colombia have been invited to take part in the Gold Cup which starts July 12 and will be co-hosted by the United States and Mexico.

Brazil are sending their under-23 team and Mexico have also opted for an experimental line-up.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Farid Mondragon (Galatasaray), Juan Carlos Henao (Caldas), David Gonzalez (Medellin).

Defenders: Robinson Munoz (Envigado), Andres Orozco (Racing Club), Gerardo Vallejo (Deportivo Cali), Jose Mera (Deportivo Cali), Luis Perea (Medellin), Kilian Virviescas (America), Ruben Dario Bustos (America)

Midfielders: Arnulfo Valentierra (Caldas), David Ferreira (America), Giovanni Hernandez (Deportivo Cali), Elkin Murillo (Deportivo Cali), Fabian Vargas (America), Ruben Dario Velasquez (Caldas), Mauricio Molina (Medellin), David Montoya (Medellin), John Javier Restrepo (Medellin), Jairo Patino (Deportivo Cali), Jorge Lopez Caballero (Millonarios)

Forwards: Jairo Castillo (America), Edson Becerra (Tolima), Julian Vasquez (America)
