Jamaica downs Paraguay in friendly Posted: Thursday July 10, 2003 6:20 AMKINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) -- Jamaica bounced back three days after a defeat to Cuba to score a 2-0 victory over Paraguay. Two of Jamaica's England-born players, Darren Byfield and Richard Langley, got the goals in Wednesday night's match at the National Stadium. Byfield, who plays for Rotherham FC in the English Division One, scored in the 10th minute while Langley of the Queens Park Rangers scored his second goal in as many matches in the 27th minute. The Reggae Boyz had suffered a 1-2 defeat to Cuba on Sunday. Wednesday's match saw an improved performance by the Jamaicans, who also play in the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup. They dominated the Paraguayans, who ended the match with 10 players after their captain and goalkeeper, Joslo Villar, was dismissed in the 58th minute for rough play. Byfield, who missed the Cuba match, benefited from an excellent move by Chicago Fire midfielder Andrew Williams, who beat two defenders before crossing into the path of a sliding Byfield for him to easily beat Villar. Villar was at his best in the 20th minute when he tipped a powerful 25-yard (-meter) drive from Ricardo Gardner wide of the upright. Seven minutes later, Langley extended the home team's lead when he capitalized on a defensive mix-up to slot past the goalkeeper from six yards (meters). Williams came close to putting Jamaica further ahead in the 32nd minute, but saw his firmly struck free-kick parried by Villar. Jamaica, which is in Group A of the Gold Cup, opens its campaign in that tournament Sunday against South American champion Colombia.
