Colombia tops Jamaica at Gold Cup

MIAMI (AP) -- Jairo Patino scored late in the first half as Colombia defeated Jamaica 1-0 in a first-round Gold Cup match Sunday in the Orange Bowl.

Colombia dominated play for most of the opening half before Patino combined with Jairo Castillo on a give-and-go play in the 42nd minute.

Patino sent a short feed to Castillo just inside the area, where Castillo returned a pass to Patino on the left wing. With no Jamaican defender marking Patino, goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts tried to cut Patino's angle, but Patino beat him with a shot that landed softly inside the right post.

Seeking an equalizer, Jamaica nearly converted in the 65th minute when Andrew Williams' blast from 25 meters (yards) was stopped with a diving save by Colombian 'keeper Farid Mondragon.

Mondragon denied Jamaica again in the 73rd minute on shots by Theodore Whitmore and Omar Daley. Whitmore's shot just outside the area was deflected by Mondragon, who stopped a long second shot from Daley.

Jamaica's final attempt came in injury time. James Lawrence retrieved a loose ball near the box but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

Although Colombia pressured Jamaica repeatedly during the first half, the South American tournament invitees went on a defensive mode in the second 45 minutes, allowing Jamaica to dictate the pace and create scoring threats.

Prior to Patino's goal, Colombia's Mauricio Molina had his 18-yard shot hit the crossbar in the 22nd minute.

Jamaica's best scoring chance of the first 45 minutes came when Richard Langley took an open shot on goal deep in the penalty area but was calmly stopped by Mondragon at the 20th minute.

Colombia, which finished fourth in the Confederations Cup last month, now leads the group with three points and will play its second match of the draw against Guatemala on Thursday night. Jamaica and Guatemala play on Tuesday night.
