El Salvador downs Martinique 1-0 to advance at Gold Cup

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Marvin Rene Gonzalez scored off a rebound in the 76th minute, and El Salvador advanced to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 1-0 victory Wednesday night over Martinique.

El Salvador next plays Costa Rica, which beat Cuba 3-0 in an earlier match, in the quarterfinals Saturday evening. The United States faces Cuba in the first quarterfinal match Saturday.

Martinique goalkeeper Eddy Heurlie came out and stopped William Torres Alegeria's shot from in front, but Gonzalez kicked the rebound into the goal.

El Salvador's Rudis Alberto Corrales nearly made it 2-0 when he broke in alone, but Heurlie made a sliding stop in the 85th minute.

Martinique's best scoring chance in the second half was just a minute before the goal. Dominique Reyal was in close, but his swift kick was blocked near the right post by goalkeeper Juan Jose Gomez.

El Salvador, which came out on the attack and played most of opening 10 minutes in Martinique's end, had the best chance of the first half when Corrales' kick from the edge of the box was blocked by Heurlie's diving stop in the 36th minute.

Like last Saturday, there were a number of El Salvadoran flags. But an announced crowd of 10,361 for the tripleheader was much smaller than when El Salvador played the United States.

Both El Salvador and Martinique lost 2-0 to the United States.

Canada was eliminated from Group D with Costa Rica winning, and Cuba losing by fewer than four goals.
