Costa Rica downs El Salvador 5-2

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Walter Centeno scored three goals, including two on penalty kicks, as Costa Rica beat El Salvador 5-2 Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Costa Rica advanced to the semifinals to face the winner of Sunday's Mexico-Jamaica game next Thursday in Mexico City.

El Salvador's Ramon Alfredo Sanchez knocked Wilmer Lopez to the ground as he was waiting for the ball in the 68th minute to set up Centeno's first penalty kick, which put Costa Rica ahead 3-2.

Steven Bryce, who replaced Winston Parks in the 65th minute, scored from 10 yards out in the 71st minute to put the game out of reach.

Centeno added a penalty-kick goal in the 90th minute.

Alfredo Alberto Pacheco tied it at 2 for El Salvador on a free kick in the 53rd minute.

Erick Scott scored to give Costa Rica a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Gilberto Alfredo Murgas pulled El Salvador to 1-1 on a penalty kick in the 34th minute, but Centeno put Costa Rica back on top 2-1 during injury time in the first half with a goal from 15 yards out.
