TURIN, Italy (AP) -- Five stars for Italian League champion Juventus told a court Monday that team doctors never gave them banned substances.

Club lawyer Luigi Chiappero said the players acknowledged taking creatine and other items but testified at the hearing that they never used performance-enhancing drugs illegal in Italy.

Juventus CEO Antonio Giraudo and club doctors are accused of giving players banned substances in the 1990s.

Team doctor Riccardo Agricola told the court that everything he gave players was for their health and not to improve their performance on the field, Chiappero said.

An investigation into the team began in 1998.

The players who testified Monday were Alessandro Del Piero, Alessandro Birindelli, Gianluca Pessotto, Antonio Conte and Alessio Tacchinardi.
