Decision due on Milito's Madrid move

Posted: Monday July 21, 2003 7:17 AM

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Real Madrid was expected to announce Monday whether it would try and sign Independiente de Avellaneda's central defender Gabriel Milito.

Reports said officials from the two clubs would meet in the Spanish capital to decide Milito's future, after Madrid put the defender's transfer on ice following his routine checkup last Friday.

Madrid said tests had found the Argentine international had not fully recovered from a right knee injury he sustained in a league match in March 2001. Milito was sidelined for nine months after tearing his cruciate ligament and then missed another four months after an operation.

The radio station Cadena SER suggested Sunday that the Spanish titlist would ditch the deal, while other media reports said Monday that it might attempt to take Milito on loan for next season.

On July 8, Madrid announced it had agreed to sign Milito from Independiente for a reported fee of euro3.5 million (US$4.5 million).

Milito, who was to sign a four-year contract, was expected to replace veteran captain Fernando Hierro, who left Madrid last month after his contract was not renewed.

Reports said a decision has to be taken before Madrid, under its new coach Carlos Quieroz, embarks on its Far East tour on Thursday.

Madrid faces the Dragon Team in Beijing on Aug. 2, when star signing David Beckham is expected to make his debut.

Three days later, Madrid meets FC Tokyo in Tokyo, and on Aug. 8 it plays China in Hong Kong. Its final game is against Malaysia on Aug. 10 in Kuala Lumpur.
