Sporting chance Portuguese No. 1 Ricardo quits Boavista for LisbonPosted: Monday July 21, 2003 7:03 AMLISBON (Reuters) -- Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo Pereira has agreed to join Sporting on a five-year contract from Boavista in the latest of a flurry of transfers to the Lisbon club, local media reported Monday. Sports newspaper Record said Boavista would receive two million euros and two yet to be named Sporting players for the 27-year-old, who is Portugal's first-choice keeper. Ricardo will get a signing-on fee of 250,000 euros and be paid 75,000 euros a month after completing a medical later Monday, said sports daily A Bola. Talks broke down earlier this month for Ricardo to move from 2001 league champion Boavista to Sporting's rival Benfica. Sporting, which finished third in the premiership last season and gained a UEFA Cup place, announced Sunday that it had signed Brazil defender Anderson Polga as it bids to regain the domestic title it last held aloft in the 2001/02 season. Last week, Barcelona's Brazilian midifielder Fabio Rochembak moved to Sporting on a three-year loan as part of a deal in which Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma joined the Catalan club. Sporting has also signed Brazilian winger Clayton Cruz from UEFA Cup winner Porto and striker Elpidio Silva from Boavista.
