Ajax, Feyenoord win openers Posted: Sunday August 17, 2003 1:26 PMAMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) -- Teenager Wesley Sneijder's late goal sealed a 2-1 victory for Ajax Amsterdam over Vitesse Arnhem in their opening match of the Dutch season on Sunday. Feyenoord also posted a close win over NEC Nijmegen by the same score, while reigning champions PSV Eindhoven were held 2-2 by Roda JC Kerkrade on Friday. Matthew Amoah put Vitesse ahead after 14 minutes, but an own goal by Purrel Frankel leveled the score midway through the first half. Ajax looked like they were going to drop two points, but 19-year-old Sneijder proved his value again by settling the match. He scored his side's only goal in their Champions League third round, first leg qualifier away to Graz AK on Tuesday. Feyenoord struggled in the first half with NEC Nijmegen, who finished fifth last season, but new signing Danko Lazovic opened the scoring seven minutes after the break. A quarter of an hour before the end Belgian international Thomas Buffel doubled their lead. NEC captain Rob Wielaert pulled one back from the penalty spot in injury time. Regilio Vrede celebrated his return to the Netherlands with the deciding goal for Groningen against NAC Breda. Volendam were defeated 1-0 at home by Heerenveen, Stefan Selakovic converting a penalty after 29 minutes. Volendam's Gijs Luirink was sent off three minutes from time. Dutch Cup winners Utrecht, with their new signing Toshiya Fujita as a starter, defeated Zwolle 1-0. Full back Patrick Zwaanswijk was the match winner.
