PARIS (AP) -- Fourth-place Saint-Etienne dropped five points behind third-place Marseille after failing to take its chances in a 0-0 draw away to Bordeaux in the French league on Thursday.,

Looking to bounce back from a 1-0 home defeat to bitter rival Lyon last weekend, Saint-Etienne almost took the lead in the second minute when winger Romain Hamouma burst into the penalty area and hit a low shot which drew a smart save from goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso.

The lively Hamouma then set up top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 14th but he shot wide from a good position, and Carrasso was saved by his crossbar in the 33rd when defender Faouzi Ghoulam tried his luck from 25 meters.

Bordeaux came back into the match after the interval, but failed to properly test Saint-Etienne.
