Reigning MLS MVP Chris Wondolowski has signed a new contract with the San Jose Earthquakes, a source close to the situation tells SI.com.

In becoming a Designated Player for the first time, Wondolowski will make $600,000 in the first year of the deal, which will increase from there. The contract is for four seasons, the first three of which are guaranteed.

Wondolowski, 30, tied the MLS single-season goal-scoring record last year with 27 goals. His 61 regular-season goals in the last three years are the most for any player in MLS history over a three-year period.

Wondolowski is doubling his guaranteed salary of $300,000 from last year. He has renegotiated his contract each of the past three seasons after bursting from anonymity into the most consistent and prolific goal-scoring threat in the league.

San Jose opens the 2013 MLS season at home against Salt Lake this Sunday.
