LONDON (AP) -- British police have opened an investigation after an Arsenal fan threw a banana at Tottenham winger Gareth Bale during the north London derby.

The piece of fruit was hurled as Bale, who is white, went to take a corner during the first half of the Premier League match at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

London police are now examining camera footage to try and identify the suspect.

Bale opened the scoring in Tottenham's 2-1 win.
