AMSTERDAM (AP) -- AZ Alkmaar says United States striker Jozy Altidore is returning to the English Premier League after his transfer to Sunderland was completed.

AZ says on its website that a deal was struck with Sunderland on Friday, and the 23-year-old Altidore passed a medical examination and agreed to a contract on Tuesday.

Altidore spent the 2009-10 season at Hull while on loan from Spanish club Villarreal. He has also played for the New York Red Bulls, Spanish team Xerez and Turkish club Bursaspor.

The New Jersey native has scored 17 times in 60 appearances for the U.S. team.
