CHICAGO (AP) - The U.S. men's national team will open its 2014 World Cup preparations with an exhibition against South Korea on Feb. 1 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

The game, announced Monday, is not on a FIFA fixture date, which means most Europe-based players won't be available.

"As a team that has qualified for Brazil, the Korea Republic will be another great benchmark for us," U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a statement. "They bring a different style of play than we have seen in the last two years, and that gives us a chance to grow. With only two or three games left before May, this will be an important opportunity for the players who will be finishing off the January camp. The message will be the same one we start with every time we get together: we are here to win."

Both teams will learn their first-round World Cup opponents on Friday, when the draw is held in Costa do Sauipe, Brazil. They have not faced one another since the 2002 World Cup group stage, when the USA played the tournament co-host to a 1-1 draw.
