ATHLETIC BILBAO
TEAM NOTES
Coach: Javier Clemente (1st year took over for Jose Luis Mendilibar after Week 10) Liga Primera
Record: 4-11-7
Rank: 18th, 19 points
Last Result: 2-1 loss at Malaga, February 4
Streak: Lost 1 Next Game: vs. Real Madrid, February 11 Relegation candidate Athletic Bilbao allowed Malaga to snap a nine-game winless streak in a 2-1 defeat at the Rosaleda Stadium. New signee Aritz Aduriz has scored three goals in his last three matches. The Basque side hosts Real Madrid this weekend in a matchup of two of the three clubs never to be relegated in Spain. Real Madrid is coming off of a 6-1 drubbing to Zaragoza in Copa del Rey action, but has a four-game winning streak in La Liga. Midfielder Tiko has an ankle injury and is in doubt for the Real Madrid match. With Athletic Bilbao struggling to stay above the relegation zone, many are questioning the club's practice of using only Basque players. Javier Clemente, who has coached the Spanish national team and Real Sociedad, sees a day when Athletic uses non-Basque and even foreign stars in the lineup. Athletic has allowed two or more goals in five of the last six matches.
