Sixth WUSA coach named Penn State's Farmer selected to head New York Power
By Michael Lewis, CNNSI.com Two-time national coach of the year Patrick Farmer of Penn State will be named coach of the New York Power today, according to reliable sources. Farmer enjoyed successful run in college soccer, a winning attitude that team officials hope he will bring to the Power, which will begin play in the fledgling, eight-team Women's United Soccer Association this spring. In 14 seasons at PSU and Ithaca College, Farmer never had a losing season, guiding the latter to back-to-back Division III titles in 1990 and 1991. During his seven-year PSU tenure, Farmer built the Nittany Lions from scratch and moved them into national prominence, directing the school to six consecutive NCAA Division I tournament appearances. His Nittany Lions had a 123-34-8 record. That included this season's 22-3-1 mark, which established a school record for wins, and a spot in the quarterfinals. Farmer, 233-57-28 in 14 college seasons, coached the Lions to the Final Four last season. Farmer, who is in Boca Raton, FL for the WUSA player combine, which runs from Tuesday through the weekend, could not be reached for comment. Farmer is the sixth coach to be named, joining Jim Gabarra (Washington Freedom), Jay Hoffman (Boston Breakers), Marcia McDermott (Carolina Tempest), Tom Stone (Atlanta Beat) and Mark Krikorian (Philadelphia Charge). The Bay Area CyberRays and San Diego Spirit have yet to name coaches. The Power has three U.S. internationals -- defender Christie Pearce, midfielder Sara Whalen and forward Tiffeny Milbrett -- and two Norwegian internationals -- defender Gro Espeseth and forward Ann Kristin Aarones. The club will begin its 21-game schedule at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale in suburban New York City in April. The WUSA's first player draft is scheduled for Sunday and Monday. Michael Lewis covers soccer for the New York Daily News. His third book, Soccer For Dummies, was published earlier this year.
