Northwestern coach heads to WUSA
NEW YORK (AP) -- Marcia McDermott was hired Thursday as coach of the Carolina Tempest of the Women's United Soccer Association, the first woman coach in the new league. McDermott comes to the WUSA from Northwestern, where she was head coach from 1994-2000. She led the Wildcats to the NCAA Division I tournament in 1996 and 1998. "When the job came up, the first reason to come to the WUSA was to get in on the ground floor and to be a part of the building process," McDermott said. "We are thrilled to have someone of Marcia's abilities lead our coaching staff," said Jerome Ramsey, president of the team. "She has a tremendous amount of coaching experience and has been around very successful programs her entire career both as a coach and player." The league begins play in April in eight cities. Also hired Thursday was former Penn State women's soccer coach Pat Farmer by the New York Power. "The pool of coaching candidates was truly outstanding," said Ramsey, who also served as president of the Power. "However, there was just something about Pat that stood out." Farmer has been Penn State's only women's soccer coach since the program's inception in 1994. He compiled a 123-34-8 record over seven seasons, capturing three Big Ten Conference championships and reaching six straight NCAA Tournaments.
