Under new management Osiander feels the wrath of Earthquakes new bosses
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Lothar Osiander was fired as coach of the San Jose Earthquakes on Friday, two days after the NHL's San Jose Sharks took over operation of the team. Osiander, a former coach of the U.S. national team, led the Earthquakes to a 7-17-8 record in his first full season. He coached the United States from 1986-88, leading the team to a 4-10-5 record. Bob Gansler replaced him before the final round of qualifying for the 1990 World Cup, when the Americans made soccer's top tournament for the first time in 40 years. Assistant coach Joe Silveira also was fired by the Earthquakes, who have missed the playoffs for four consecutive years. The Sharks own the Earthquakes through their business operations and marketing arm.
