Just in time United beats cap deadline, sends Llamosa to MiamiUpdated: Sunday February 04, 2001 1:42 PM WASHINGTON (AP) -- Shortly before Saturday's deadline to get under the salary cap, D.C. United traded U.S. national team defender Carlos Llamosa to Miami for defender-midfielder Brian Kamler and the No. 4 overall selection in Monday's MLS draft. United was over the cap and had to make a move. Nearly every player was considered tradable, including Llamosa, who started 75 games over four seasons with United. "It will be difficult to see Carlos Llamosa in another team's uniform," United general manager Kevin Payne said. " Carlos continues to be among the elite defenders in the league, but this was a move we felt we had to make to address problems regarding our salary structure." Kamler was a sixth-round pick by United in the 1996 draft and was traded to Miami during the 1999 season. He was never happy with the move to South Florida. "We are happy to have Brian Kamler back with United," said Payne. "He is a versatile player who will help us in a number of positions. He will provide us with either a solid starter or high quality depth." More importantly, United now has a first-round pick in Monday's draft. Prior to the trade, United did not have a first- or second-round selection. "We hope to choose a player with the number four pick who will help us for a number of years to come," said Payne. Fusion coach Ray Hudson had said his team's two greatest needs in the offseason were central defense and central midfield. "Llamosa is synonymous with exceptional central defending," said Hudson. "He is as tenacious in the air as he is on the ground. He's hard as nails and is a real footballer. I want Carlos to be our tower of strength, the heart of our defense."
