WUSA holds supplemental draft
Posted: Sunday February 04, 2001 3:03 PM
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Notre Dame defender Kelly Lindsey was the first pick in the Women's United Soccer Association's supplemental college draft Sunday.
Lindsey was selected by the Bay Area Cyber Rays, as 32 players were chosen in the four-round draft - four to each of the eight teams in the new league.
The WUSA begins play April 14, with the Cyber Rays at the Washington Freedom.
Washington took Jen Grubb, also of Notre Dame, with the second choice. Other first-round selections were Staci Reynolds of Brigham Young by the Carolina Courage; Tina August of San Diego State by the Boston Breakers; Katy Tracy of Virginia by the New York Power; Karissa Hampton of UCLA by the San Diego Spirit; Courtney Saunders of Baylor by the Philadelphia Charge; and Maite Zabala of California-Berkeley by the Atlanta Beat.
Each WUSA team now has 24 players. Teams were initially allocated three of the league's founding players, members of the 1999 U.S. Women's World Cup champion, and two international stars. A 15-round player draft was held in December.
