U.S. Soccer honors top players
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Chris Armas was selected Tuesday as men's player of the year by the U.S. Soccer Federation. Tiffeny Milbrett was chosen as women's player of the year. Armas, a midfielder from Brentwood, N.Y., who plays for Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire, led the national team last year in starts (14) and minutes played (1,200), despite missing two months with a torn ligament. Armas' play helped the team to a record nine shutouts in 2000. He was an MLS All-Star last year and helped lead the Fire to the MLS Cup championship game. Milbrett, a forward from Portland, Ore., who plays for the Women's United Soccer Association's New York Power, was second on the national team last year in scoring with 15 goals and nine assists. She scored three goals with the silver medal-winning Olympic team in Australia. Milbrett has 81 goals in 164 national team games. Landon Donovan, a forward from Redlands, Calif., who plays for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, was picked as the men's youth athlete of the year and Santa Clara midfielder Aly Wagner, from San Jose, Calif., was selected as women's youth athlete of the year.
