D.C. acquires Honduras defender Reyes

ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- D.C. United announced Thursday that the club has acquired Honduras national team defender Milton Reyes as a discovery player.

Reyes has signed a contract with Major League Soccer, but terms of the pact were not released. Reyes will join D.C. United in Washington next week and will be available for United's CONCACAF Champions Cup seconnd-leg match against CSD Comunicaciones on Wednesday.

"We are excited to add a world-class defender of Milton Reyes' caliber to our team," said United technical director Dave Kasper. "He is a savvy, composed defender who will bring solid leadership and excitement to our back line.

"We are happy that this long process of signing Milton is over and look forward to fitting him into our team chemistry as soon as possible."

Reyes, 27, is married to a U.S. citizen and possesses a green card, thus he does not count as one of United's three senior internationals. Nicknamed "Jocon," Reyes is known for his tireless work ethic on the right flank. He is a tenacious defender with pace, skill and the ability to go forward and become a weapon in the attack.

"Milton is a box-to-box player whose relentless drives up and down the right flank should give opponents fits," said United coach Ray Hudson. "He is ultra-competitive, with a dynamicism that will be effective in defense as well as offense. He is a solid addition to our team."

Reyes has been a mainstay over the past few years for his country and former club CD Motagua of Tegucigalpa. He has made 32 international appearances (0 goals) with the national team and was a key in Honduras' strong run in World Cup qualifying.
