Courageous effort Overbeck's OT goal sends Carolina to title gamePosted: Saturday August 17, 2002 7:57 PM
CARY, N.C. (AP) -- Carla Overbeck scored on a rebound 1:20 into overtime Saturday as the Carolina Courage advanced to the WUSA title game with a 2-1 win against the Atlanta Beat. The Courage (13-5-4) needed a late rally to secure its date in the Founders Cup against Washington next week. Danielle Fotopoulos scored on a penalty kick in the 89th minute to tie the game after Atlanta's Marci Miller tripped Hege Riise inside the penalty area. Fotopoulos sent the ball past a diving Briana Scurry for her 12th goal of the year. Early in the overtime, Scurry got a glove on a shot from Birgit Prinz inside the penalty box. Overbeck ran in unmarked and knocked in the loose ball for her first points of the year. Atlanta played the last 33 minutes of regulation with 10 players after Julie Augustyniak received her second yellow card, both coming for tripping Riise. Carolina outshot Atlanta 20-6, including a 13-1 edge after Augustyniak's ejection. Atlanta (11-10-1) took the first lead on Nikki Serlenga's penalty kick in the 28th minute. That kick was set up when Fotopoulos elbowed Cindy Parlow in the back during a corner kick. The game was then stopped for 30 minutes due to lightning.
