New England stays in playoff chase

NAPERVILLE, Illinois (Ticker) -- Newcomer Daouda Kante scored in the 89th minute as the New England Revolution kept alive their playoff hopes with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire.

With regulation time winding down, midfielder Steve Ralston sent a corner kick from the left into the penalty area. A 2001 sixth-round draft pick of the now-defunct Miami Fusion, Kante beat defender Jim Curtin to the ball and deflected a header past goalkeeper Zach Thornton for the game-winner.

Before the second consecutive sellout crowd at Cardinal Stadium, the Revs won for the first time in 12 games this season when yielding the first goal.

Curtin opened the scoring in the 50th minute, rising among a group of defenders to put home a header. Ante Razov sent a free kick from the right wing to Curtin, who made a run to the six-yard box in front of the net and headed in his second goal of the season to past diving 'keeper Adin Brown.

New England tied it in the 65th minute on the second goal of the season by second-half substitute Wolde Harris. Fellow Jamaican Winston Griffiths started the play, finding Taylor Twellman open just in front of the penalty area.

Twellman flipped the ball up to his waist and played a right-footed lob volley to a streaking Harris, who one-timed a left-footed volley into the top left corner of the net.

Twellman is tied with Los Angeles Galaxy striker Carlos Ruiz for the MLS lead with 34 points.
