Coming up Roses Galaxy roll past Wizards 5-2, back into semifinalsPosted: Thursday October 03, 2002 2:31 AMPASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Soon to play in a new home, the Los Angeles Galaxy are making their final season in the Rose Bowl a winning one. The Galaxy reached the Major League Soccer semifinals, beating the Kansas City Wizards 5-2 Wednesday night and extending their Rose Bowl winning streak to eight games. Cobi Jones and Carlos Ruiz each scored twice for Los Angeles and McKinley Tennyson had a goal in his MLS debut. Chris Klein and Preki scored for Kansas City. The Galaxy, who move to Carson in June, won the first-round series six points to three. Five points were needed to advance, with three points awarded for a win and one for a tie. Los Angeles lost 4-1 at Kansas City on Saturday, forcing a third game. "They took it to us in Kansas City and to come back and to do the same thing to them sets a tone and builds some confidence going into the next game," Jones said. The Galaxy open their semifinal against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at the Rose Bowl. Game 2 is Wednesday at Colorado. Game 3, if necessary, is Oct. 12, at an undetermined site. The Rose Bowl is unavailable because of UCLA football. Los Angeles held a 2-0 halftime lead, allowed a goal two minutes into the second half, then put the game away by scoring twice in a five-minute span. The Galaxy opened the scoring in the 34th minute. Ruiz rolled a right-footed shot under a diving Kansas City goalkeeper Tony Meola off Sasha Victorine's free kick. Jones' unassisted goal during injury time in the first half made it 2-0. The Wizards drew to 2-1 in the 47th minute on Klein's goal off assists from Eric Quill and Chris Brown. But the Galaxy sealed it with two goals. Jones scored in the 62nd minute, putting in a rebound of Ruiz's shot that rebounded off the left post and Kansas City defender Nick Garcia was unable to take possession. Ruiz scored in the 66th minute, faking Garcia and then shooting diagonally past Meola, inside the left post. Preki scored on a 72nd-minute free kick for the Wizards, deflecting his shot off a Galaxy player in the wall. Tennyson's goal came during injury time for Los Angeles. |
