Letting it all go

Jimmy Conrad, a defender with the San Jose Earthquakes, contributes regularly to CNNSI.com during the MLS season. The defending champion Quakes were eliminated in the MLS quarterfinals by the Columbus Crew.

Congregation,

Can I get a witness for the 2002 season?
Someone with answers who can give me a reason
To why it didn't happen -- the repeat, the dream
The disappointment felt by all; the fans and the team.

Do we still merit the right to hold our heads up high?
The dedication and hard work -- "poof" -- in the blink of an eye.
I can still smell the pitch and visualize a missed chance
Leading me back to the euphoria of our victory dance.

I wish we could always win and go undefeated
Holding the Cup on our throne to never be unseated.
"We are the king of the mountain; we are better than the rest."
Who can doubt the majestic undertones of being the best?

The red carpet, the ring, the uninhibited power
Dressed in the robes of the celebratory hour.
For the moment has come and thou shalt kneel down
To pass over the pressure, "Here is your crown."

From hunter to hunted, now fortune and fame,
"Next year you'll be confident but it won't be the same.
Something is different, your weaknesses exposed
Injuries, bad calls, you'll think you've been hosed."

It's worth it though, this journey, this roller-coaster ride.
Give me the front seat so there's nowhere to hide.
I want the loopty-loops, the drops, and everything in between.
The risk is in not trying, in not being seen.

The challenge looms large and never goes away
Except for that one shining moment, that one special day
When everything comes together and it all makes perfect sense,
That the key to winning a championship is playing good defense.

"A shameless plug you ask?" As if you didn't know
The objective of scribbling down these words was to let it all go.
The frustration, the sadness, and getting my mind on track
So when I see you after next year's playoffs, I'll get a deserved pat on the back.

(Insert Standing Ovation Here)

You're too kind... I'm here every night at 7 folks,

Jimmy Conrad
