U.S. gets 2004 Olympics qualifying draw

NEW YORK (AP) -- The United States was drawn Friday to play either Dominica or St. Kitts and Nevis in the second round of qualifying for next year's Olympic soccer tournament.

If the U.S. team wins its home-and-home, total-goals series, it would advance to the final eight teams in the North and Central American and Caribbean region. The Americans would be drawn into a four-team group, with the top two nations advancing to the regional semifinals.

Each semifinal winner qualifies for the 2004 Athens Games. The Americans finished fourth in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

While the men's Olympic soccer tournament is primarily limited to players under 23, national teams compete in the women's tournament.

The American women, who lost the 2000 Olympic final to Norway in overtime, have a bye until the final round of regional qualifying, as does Canada and Mexico.
