On board Adu expected to make U.S. debut with U-17s in MarchPosted: Sunday February 16, 2003 12:54 AMCHICAGO (AP) -- Freddy Adu, a 13-year-old soccer player from Ghana, has become a U.S. citizen and is expected to make his debut for the Americans next month in qualifying for the FIFA Under-17 Championship. Adu, who came to the United States when he was 8, became a citizen when his mother gained citizenship Thursday in Baltimore, U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Jim Moorhouse said. Adu has been training with the U.S. team in Bradenton, Florida, and is expected to play his first official game March 5 against Jamaica at Guatemala City in a qualifier for the FIFA Under-17 Championship. He would be the youngest player ever to appear for a U.S. national soccer team.
