    SCOUTING REPORT

It's 20 months and counting since the CyberRays won the inaugural Founders Cup title, a magical experience that made last year's failure to reach the postseason all the more bitter. Injuries and an inability to ease WUSA scoring champion Katia's workload caused problems in 2002, but extensive depth in midfield and on the back line and adjustments up top have San Jose feeling good about its chances.

Katia, who scored 15 goals and broke Tiffeny Milbrett's single-season points mark, possesses unique talent that grows as her focus improves.

The acquisition of Mandy Clemens, who underachieved in Philadelphia, and fellow Brazilian Pretinha's move up front from midfield should provide better support. Sissi remains the primary string-puller.

Brandi Chastain, hindered by injuries all last season, can -- and probably will -- play everywhere except in goal. Rookie Betsy Barr is the defensive midfielder the 'Rays have never had. Second-level national-teamers Thori Bryan and Kelly Lindsey anchor the backline. Goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene will be seeking a return to her fantastic 2001 form. The additions of Keri Sanchez, Ann Cook and Katie Barnes provide depth on all lines.
