CHICAGO (AP) -- Goalkeeper Tim Howard, midfielder Chris Armas and forward Taylor Twellman were among seven players cut Wednesday from the U.S. roster for this month's CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Defenders C.J. Brown and Nick Garcia also were cut along with midfielders Chris Klein and Steve Ralston. The seven, who were on the original 25-man roster announced Monday, were selected as alternates.

In addition, Garcia was added to the roster for Sunday's exhibition game against Paraguay in Columbus, Ohio.

"Our goal is certainly to defend the Gold Cup championship," said U.S. coach Bruce Arena when announcing his 25-man squad. "Ultimately, we are trying to develop a squad capable of competing in World Cup qualifying, and to be able to compete against teams from our region in this type of environment is invaluable."
