'Day to day' Beasley in question for U.S., Razov for ChicagoPosted: Wednesday July 09, 2003 5:21 PMUpdated: Wednesday July 09, 2003 6:06 PM FOXBORO, Massachusetts (Reuters) -- United States and Chicago Fire midfielder DaMarcus Beasley was injured during training on Wednesday as the Americans prepared to open the defense of their CONCACAF Gold Cup title. Meanwhile, an MRI taken Wednesday confirmed an anterior soft tissue tear in the left ankle of Fire forward Ante Razov. The Fire's all-time leading scorer and current MLS leading goal scorer is questionable for Saturday's showdown against D.C. United. Razov suffered the non-contact injury during last Saturday's 0-0 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes as he was attempting a pass and was carried off the field in the 61st minute. Prior to the incident, the 29-year-old striker had registered nine goals and three assists for 21 points in 10 appearances this season. Razov was named the MLS Player of the Month for June after an impressive month that saw him notch 15 points on six goals and three assists in five games. Beasley suffered a mild sprain to the right ankle after he was tackled by teammate Frankie Hejduk. The Chicago Fire player was helped off the pitch by team staff and did not return to training. Team spokesman Michael Kammerman said Beasley's status was "day to day" and that he would be evaluated by medical staff later on Wednesday. Kammerman said he was not sure if Beasley would need to have a scan. Beasley inspired the United States to a 2-0 victory over Paraguay in a friendly at the weekend and is expected to play a key role during their campaign for the Gold Cup, which starts on Saturday. "I expect him to be ready [to play]," said U.S. coach Bruce Arena. "He's a tough kid and for his size, he takes a lot of punishment." The U.S. meets El Salvador and Martinique in the opening round.
