NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Four members of the MetroStars were among the 16 players selected on Wednesday to represent the MLS in the annual All-Star Game.

Goaltender Tim Howard, defender Eddie Pope and midfielders Clint Mathis and Amado Guevara of the MetroStars will compete in the game, which features a matchup of league All-Stars against the Mexican club Chivas de Guadalajara.

The MLS game will take place on August 2 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Howard, a member of the U.S. national team, is 6-3-3 for the MetroStars this season. Mathis leads the MetroStars with seven goals.

The Chicago Fire and the Los Angeles Galaxy each had three players selected. Defenders Carlos Bocanegra, midfielder DaMarcus Beasley and forward Ante Razov were the Chicago selections. Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman, defender Danny Califf and forward Carlos Ruiz will represent the Galaxy.

Veteran forward Preki of the Kansas City Wizards also was selected and can become the first MLS player to appear in eight straight All-Star matches.

Defender Frankie Hejduk and mifielder Kyle Martino were selected from the Columbus Crew.

The rest of the team includes forward Taylor Twellman of the New England Revolution, defender Ryan Nelson of the D.C. United and forward Landon Donovan of the San Jose Earthquakes.

This will mark the first season that the All-Star Game will feature a single MLS All-Star team against an international club. An All-Star team defeated the U.S. national team in last year's game.

The 16 players were elected through voting by fans, media, players and coaches and general managers, with each representing 25 percent of the final tally.
