WUSA Roundup Serlenga's first goal lifts Atlanta back into firstPosted: Thursday July 10, 2003 3:39 AMATLANTA (AP) -- Nikki Serlenga scored her first goal of the season in the 73rd minute Wednesday, leading the Atlanta Beat to a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Spirit. The Beat (7-3-4) regained sole possession of first place in the WUSA, moving three points ahead of idle Boston. Briana Scurry got her fifth shutout this season and 18th of her WUSA career. The loss ended a four-game unbeaten streak for San Diego (5-4-6), which missed a chance to stand alone in first place for the first time. In a game that featured five yellow cards, Serlenga bounced in a free kick from 30 meters (yards) out on the left side, lofting it over a group of San Diego defenders and past goalkeeper Jaime Pagliarulo.
Freedom 4, Charge 2In Washington, Abby Wambach scored twice in the first half as Washington beat Philadelphia for its first win at home in almost two months. Washington (6-4-3) won for just the second time in eight games. The Freedom's last home win, a 4-1 victory over Philadelphia, was May 10 and was part of Washington's 4-0-1 start. Wambach, who has scored five goals against the Charge (3-7-4) this season, gave Washington a 2-1 lead in the 27th minute. She made it 3-1 in the 30th minute.
