Moore named WUSA player of week Posted: Tuesday July 15, 2003 7:01 PMATLANTA (SI.com) -- Philadelphia goalkeeper Melissa Moore has been selected as the league's Player of the Week for the week ending June 15. Moore recorded consecutive shutouts, against both San Diego and New York, to lead the Charge to a 1-0-1 mark for the week. Moore made six saves in the 2-0 win over the Spirit on June 14 and registered two saves on June 11 in a 0-0 tie versus New York giving the 5-foot-9 goalkeeper a total of eight saves during the week. Moore has also allowed only one goal in her last three games, with that tally being a penalty-kick goal in the 20th minute of Philadelphia's 2-1 win over San Diego on June 7. She has logged 249 consecutive scoreless minutes and has a 0.33 goals-against average in the last three games, making 13-of-14 saves during that span. Moore is the second goalkeeper in past three weeks to be selected as the Player of the week. Moore's 22 points (10 first place, 2 second place) defeated New York's Christie Welsh (19 pts.). Others who received votes were Carolina's Birgit Prinz and Kristin Luckenbill, Atlanta's Melanie Wilson, New York's Margaret Tietjen and Philadelphia's Marinette Pichon. The Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association. |
