DENVER (AP) -- Kroenke Sports Enterprises might be interested in buying the Colorado Rapids soccer team from Phil Anschutz's sports ownership group, the Rocky Mountain News reported Thursday.

A source close to Kroenke Sports told the Denver newspaper the company is not only interested in buying the Major League Soccer team, but has also considered building a stadium for the team near downtown.

Only two MLS teams play in soccer-only stadiums.

David Ehrlich, executive vice president of Kroenke Sports Enterprises, wouldn't comment on whether his company was interested in the Rapids, but wouldn't rule out acquiring a MLS team.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber said "there have been discussions with various groups about [the Rapids]."

Anschutz Entertainment Group owns the Rapids, along with five other MLS teams. Officials with Anschutz and Kroenke did not return calls seeking comment Thursday.

MLS teams have sold for a wide range of prices. Anschutz paid $26 million for the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1998, but the Chicago Fire cost him just $5 million one year earlier.

Kroenke Sports Enterprises owns the Pepsi Center, home to the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets.
