Wambach wins WUSA player of month

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Washington Freedom forward Abby Wambach, who has scored three game-winning goals in six games, was named WUSA Player of the Month on Thursday.

Wambach collected six goals and 13 points as Washington went 3-1-2 in July. The 5-10 forward scored twice in wins over Philadelphia and New York.

Wambach, the 2002 Rookie of the Year, has three multi-goal games this season to lead the WUSA. She scored in five of the Freedom's six games, including four over her last three outings.

Also considered were Atlanta's Briana Scurry, New York's Cheryl Salisbury, San Diego's Christine Latham, Boston's Karina LeBlanc, Carolina's Venus James and Philadelphia's Stacey Tullock.
