Who's the best player in the Women's World Cup?

Posted: Sunday September 05, 1999 06:26 PM's users selected Mia Hamm as their favorite player in the Women's World Cup. Matthew Stockman/Allsport asked users to tell us about their favorite player in the Women's World Cup. Mia Hamm was the favorite, but the team's other players held their own. For some of the most interesting responses, read on.

I think that Mia Hamm is the best player. She has the strongest foot, the straightest kick, and the hardest head. She is not afraid of anything. Mia is the one person that should and will go down in all the record books and she will go down in history!!
-- Erin Petersen, Gretna, Neb.

Kristine Lilly is the best player in the world. She plays the entire field, relentlessly, and is consistent, reliable, and always "on". She does all the work!
-- Jodi Morrow, Wilton, Conn.

The most phenomenal person on the planet is Julie Foudy. My hometown gives me a certain bias, but to have watched Julie excel at anything and everything - athletic, academic, or otherwise, has given me the inspiration to go full-steam in all of my endeavors. Everyone has to have an idol. Mine just happens to be a woman.
-- Jesse Teverbaugh, Mission Viejo, Calif.

Mia Hamm is the best women's soccer player right now. She is always thinking ahead to what is best for the team and how her actions will impact the result. Her ability to visualize the entire field and make a situation work to the US team's advantage is unmatched by any other player.
-- Lori Cancilla, Farmington, Mich.

Michelle Akers is the best. She helped put women's soccer on the map in the US, and through everything she has battled, she is still gives 110%.
-- Tracy Davis, Hellertown, Penn.

The best player in the wold right now, without any question is Rosely, striker from Brazil. Hard worker, team player, excellent speed "with the ball under control", by far the best skills in the game, unstoppable one on one against any defender, goal scorer. With all these qualities (without any support in a country that cares only for men's soccer), imagine if she had the support that women's soccer have in the USA?
-- Roberto dos Santos, Brasilia, Brazil

I think that Mia Hamm is the greatest player of all the women that play soccer. I really look up to her since I am still in high school and I am playing soccer too! She is AWESOME!!!!!
-- Jessica Hoeppner, Archbold, Ohio

I believe the best player in the world has to be Shannon MacMillan. I like her style of play and she is scrappy. Also, she is the glue that holds the team together. Her dramatic ball handling skills and passes are what makes her teammates so effective.
-- Scot Y. Kim, Los Altos, Calif.

I think that Tiffeny Milbrett is one of the best players and most overlooked. She has been the 2nd leading scorer on the U.S. team for the last 3 years, and held the NCAA scoring title along with Mia up until Danielle broke their record.
-- Missy Burnett, Portland, Ore.

Joy Fawcett, Carla Overbeck, Brandi Chastain and Debbie Keller are the soccer players in the world, so it's not just one for me that's the best. It's these four ladies that make the game great to watch.
-- Suzi May, Vernon, Conn.

Tisha Venturini is an extremely exciting player to watch and definitely knows how to use her head.
-- Rob Mazzini, West Palm Beach, Fla.

I don't think Mia Hamm or Michelle Akers are the best women players in the world -- I think that honour should go to Sissi of Brazil. With her smooth dribbles, creativity and a free kick that could make a grown man cry, I think she is the obvious choice. I think Mia and Michelle are way over-hyped.
-- Kenchukwu Eke, Dallas, Texas

I think Michelle Akers is the best player of all time, but since she is going to be retiring my new favorite current player is going to be Fotopolous. I watched her play in college, and I think she has something special. But Akers will always be number 1 to me.
-- Heather Ashley, Philomath, Ore.

The U.S. team is the best in the world. Mia Hamm is definitely great but so is everyone else. I think I like Mia Hamm and Michelle Akers most because of their outlook and attitudes on soccer and their fellow teammates. Mia Hamm is first to give credit to teammates instead of herself. And all Michelle Akers goes through is incredible and inspiring. They are all great role models.
-- Kristen Olive, Columbia, Tenn.

There is no doubt in my mind who the best is, Mia Hamm. Shes a great teammate, fierce competitor, brillant striker, creative playmaker, and the best spokesperson for soccer all rolled up into one person.
-- Patrick Feltman, St. Louis, Mo.
