ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- Corinthians striker Edilson was voted by the media as the best player in the first FIFA Club World Championship in Brazil.

The Brazilian receives the Golden Ball award, traditionally given to the outstanding individual at every FIFA tournament. Edilson polled 221 votes.

In second place, and winner of the Silver Ball, was Edmundo of Vasco da Gama (189 votes), while his teammate and fellow striker Romario finished third with 125 votes.

A total of 28 players were named in the voting, five of them from the winning team, Corinthians, and seven from second-place Vasco da Gama.

Romario and Real Madrid's French striker, Nicolas Anelka, shared the Golden Shoe award as the top goal-scorers in the Championship.

Anelka and Romario each registered three goals in the tournament.

The Bronze Shoe was also shared by Edilson and Edmundo, with two goals and one assist.

FIFA's Fair Play Award at the tournament went to Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia.

The Asian representatives in the inaugural tournament came top of the table of eight participating clubs at the end of the 14-match competition.

Points were awarded throughout the event on the basis of the behavior of the players and other delegation members on and off the field of play, as well as the team's "contribution to positive, attacking football."

The award consists of a trophy and diploma, medals for the delegation and US$10,000 worth of sports equipment for the development of youth football.
