Portugal's Coelho quits after loss

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Portuguese coach Humberto Coelho immediately announced his resignation after Portugal's 2-1 overtime loss to France in the semifinal of Euro 2000.

"As of July 31, I will no longer be coach," Coelho said moment after a Zinedine Zidane "golden goal" penalty had ended Portugal's best run in a major tournament since the 1984 European championships.

Coelho said it was time for nother coach to take over by the time Portugal begins it World Cup 2002 campaign in September. He had been national team coach for the past two seasons.
