England's hero of the Euro 1996 campaign after some outstanding performances and penalty saves, Seaman has managed to hold on to the number one jersey despite signs that at 36 he could be past his best. Throughout the 1990's he has been a solid presence in Arsenal's last line of defence, and has been relatively unchallenged as first-choice for his country ever since England failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup finals. An excellent shot-stopper and impeccable at claiming crosses, his only flaw can be an occasional lapse in concentration - as illustrated most famously by Nayim's unforgettable goal from the halfway-line in the 1994/95 European Cup-Winners' Cup Final. But for his country he continues to be a solid and experienced influence on his defence, and will be as reliable as ever in what is likely to be his last major championships.
