Profile
Petit's dynamic central midfield partnership with compatriot Patrick Vieira has had much to do with Arsenal's emergence as a genuine European force and the capture of the Double in Petit's first season at Highbury. Petit topped that in the summer of 1998, by scoring the third and last goal in France's triumphant 1998 World Cup final win over Brazil. Before moving to England, Petit had spent his entire career with Monaco, winning a league winner's medal in 1997, where he was more at home at left-back than in midfield. However Arsene Wenger has used him as a central holding midfielder, blessed with obvious defensive strength. He made his international debut a decade ago, but it is only now after his displays at the last World Cup that he is a genuine contender for a regular starting spot.
