| Profile |
| A hugely popular player, Barthez has guided Monaco to their league triumph in the recent campaign, their second title in four years, before moving to English champions Manchester United in a multi-million pound deal
An agile shot-stopper, Barthez began his top-flight career with Toulouse in 1991, before moving on to Marseille.
There he helped his side become the first French side to capture a European trophy in 1993, when they defeated AC Milan to win the Champions' League. He became a hero at the Stade Velodrome when he stayed at the club despite their relegation and helped them back into the French first division.
He eventually did leave for Monaco in 1995 and has emerged as France's top keeper during his time in the principality. This culminated in him being ever-present during France World Cup triumph on home soil in 1998 and he remains first choice under new coach Roger Lemerre.
