Profile
Quite simply one of the best defenders in world football and a cult hero in France for his double-strike that saw off Croatia in the World Cup semi-final in 1998 in the Stade De France. A powerful, resolute defender, he moved to Serie A with Parma in 1996 after seven years with Monaco. He plays at centre-half for his club alongside Italian regular Fabio Cannavaro, forming one of the best partnerships in the game. For France he is a driving force from right-back, with Blanc and Desailly the central partnership. Thuram also has good distribution and the ability to surge forward from the back after breaking up opposition attacks. Having been capped over 50 times for France, his goals against Croatia remain his only goals for Les Bleus.
