| Profile |
| The Marseille skipper has suffered along with the rest of his side as the team have struggled to stay clear of the relegation places in the French first division. However, on form he is a pacy, skilful midfielder, who can also play in attack. He made his name at Metz, before moving to the Stade Velodrome after the glorious summer of 1998.
In his first season Marseille were denied the French title in the last minute of the last game by Bordeaux, but Pires was one of the players of the season, with his swift, incisive skills causing problems for every defence in the league.
Capped around 30 times for Les Bleus, he is a certainty for the final 22 and is likely to be used as a substitute, giving coach Lemerre a different attacking option to introduce.
