| An outstanding attacking full-back, Candela was plucked from the relative obscurity of Guingamp by Serie A giants Roma in 1997. Candela had started out at Toulouse in 1992, before moving to Guingamp in 1995.
He made his debut for France just before his move to Italy in October 1996 against Turkey, but has had to settle for a place on the bench due to the continued excellence of Lizarazu.
He has matured at Roma into a world-class marauding wing-back, who pushes forward at every opportunity and his form alerted the true giants of Italian football, but he chose to stay in the capital. He continued in the same vein last season, excelling for Fabio Capello's side as they were among the early pacesetters in Serie A.
