Euro 2000 Scoreboard: Preview
Today's Scoreboards | Recap
Italy, Sweden
Posted: 26 June 2000 8:51 AM GMT

The last time Italy rested several players in a European Championship match, the move backfired disastrously, hastening their exit from Euro 96 at the first-round stage.

However, with two wins under their belt and their place in the quarter-finals already assured, Dino Zoff's side have the luxury of doing just that when they take on a Sweden side who must win in their final Group B match on Monday.

The Swedes, beaten by Belgium, are playing for their lives as victory would give them a chance of reaching the last eight, though only if Turkey spring a surprise by beating Belgium in the other remaining match.

With six points out of six, Italy look set to give a starting place to striker Alessandro Del Piero, who was left as substitute in the opening two games.

The Juventus striker looked a class act in his two brief appearances, and with Francesco Totti not overly impressive so far, Del Piero looks certain to start.

Captain Paolo Maldini may be rested after battling through injury to take his place in the first two games, while the midfield could also be shaken up, though Filippo Inzaghi looks sure to shake off a wrist injury in time to take his place in the side.

For Sweden, unlucky to lose against Belgium but poor against Turkey, they simply have to win and coaches Tommy Soderberg and Lars Lagerback faces a tough decision of who to play in attack.

Striker Kennet Andersson twisted his ankle in the 0-0 draw with Turkey though he is expected to be fit to join Henrik Larsson up front.

Long-serving defender Roland Nilsson misses the match after suffering concussion in the match with Turkey, while Patrik Andersson is suspended following his red card against Belgium.
