Euro 2000 Scoreboard: Recap

Romania 0, Portugal 1

Portugal became the fourth side to reach the quarter-finals at Euro 2000 after they clinched a 1-0 victory over Romania in Arnhem thanks to a dramatic last-minute goal from substitute Francisco Da Costa.

The Monaco midfielder, known as Costinha, rose well to head home Luis Figo's last-gasp free-kick and leave Romania needing victory over England in their final match to stand a chance of going through.

For long periods, Romania matched Portugal, who had the better of the possession, but unlike in the 3-2 win over England, failed to put the finishing touches to some fine moves, until the last minute, that is.

Costinha rose unmarked in the area to head Figo's free-kick past Stelea in the Romania goal and send the Portugal crowd into raptures.

The Portuguese had the better of the possession, but unlike in the 3-2 win over England, they failed to put the finishing touches to some fine moves.

At the other end, Romania went close with a Moldovan header and a late long-range shot from Gheorghe Hagi, but though they tried to prise a winner, both sides looked happy to settle for a point.

Portugal went into the game knowing another victory would assure their place in the last eight.

Both teams made one change to their sides from the opening round of matches. Portugal coach Humberto Coelho brought in Carlos Secretario for Abel Xavier, while Romania coach Emerich Jenei replaced defender Liviu Ciobotariu with Cosmin Contra.

As they did against England, Portugal were slick in attack but still left holes in defence, the only difference being that Romania were unable to take advantage.

Figo and Rui Costa were at the centre of everything that Portugal did well, and Nuno Gomes wasted an early chance when he dragged the ball wide of the post after just four minutes.

Romania suffered an early blow when Hagi was booked for a foul which means he will miss his country's last group match against England on Tuesday.

Cristian Chivu enjoyed some success down the left wing and two crosses had the Portugal defence at full stretch to clear the ball.

Vitor Baia did his best to hand Romania a shock lead when he dropped a hanging cross but the Portugal keeper made amends soon after as he came off his line fast to stop the second of Chivu's centres.

The best chance of the entire half fell to the head of Couto, who rose well to meet Figo's free-kick, but could only head over the bar.

Portugal made a double change early in the second half with Lazio's Sergio Conceicao and Sa Pinto replacing Nuno Gomes and Joao Pinto.

Figo failed to have the effect on matters he did in the opening half as Romania worked hard to deny him the space he loves to run into, while Hagi, who suffered a disappointing game all round, volleyed well wide after good work from Romania's Dan Petrescu.

Fernando Couto produced a sublime piece of skill to set up a chance for Portugal but the header from Sa Pinto fell tamely into the hands of Romania goalkeeper Stelea.

Hagi almost signed off with a fantastic long-range effort five minutes from time, but Baia tipped it over.

But Costinha, the man brought into the squad to boost the midfield, headed home a winner which puts Portugal through to the last eight alongside France, Italy and hosts Holland.
